Desert Tales: A Wicked Lovely Novel

Desert Tales: A Wicked Lovely Novel - Melissa Marr "There were words he could say, wicked phrases and lovely reminders, but they would only hide the lie." (126)

How did I have no idea this book existed? When I found out that Melissa Marr had written another book set in the Wicked Lovely world (based on the graphic novels), I can't tell you how excited I was. I've missed this incredible world that she created so much. There really is nothing else like it.

One of my favorite stories is that of Donia, one of the Winter Girls that had to learn how to live after being turned into a Faerie and then rejected as Summer Queen. So when I found out this book was going to be about another of the forsaken Winter Girls, I couldn't wait to dive in.

I really liked Rika a lot. Marr does an amazing job of writing strong, smart female characters, and Rika is no exception. There are many novels that claim that the main character is incredibly smart or strong, but as the story unfolds, and the truths that we, as readers, see as obvious, completely escape the heroine, it makes her look like an idiot, regardless of what we've been told. Marr has a way of writing plot twists and betrayals, and yet the characters still remain intelligent in our eyes. It's impressive, and I never tire of her heroines!

The new characters were exciting to meet, and the old ones were like seeing old friends (even if you find those friends completely frustrating at times). I really loved Sionnach, because I thought his character was complex. You never quite knew what his motives really were, or if he should be trusted. He kept me on my toes, and kept me guessing.

If you haven't read the other Wicked Lovely books, you could read this book on its own, but I think I would read at least the first one (Wicked Lovely) first, because this book definitely spoils the ending. Besides, it's completely awesome, one of my favorites ever, so you should totally read it for that reason alone. If you have read the Wicked Lovely series, you will love coming back to this world, and seeing a little of what was happening behind the scenes, and you will fall for Rika, just like you did with Aislinn, Donia, Leslie, & Ani!

Now I need to go check out the graphic novels!
