Wow, look at that cover! Isn't it amazing? I just love it!I really enjoyed this book. I finished it in about a day and a half, coming off of a complete disaster of a book that took me a week to get through (only to find out it was the first in a series.....UGH). So, I was very happy to have a good book to dive into after that! And I'm happy to say that, whether or not Shatered Souls ends up having a sequel, it certainly doesn't NEED one, and I am SO thankful about that!! It's nice to just have a good read that I feel was resolved when I finished it. Shattered Souls started out kind of like Angelfire, I think. In fact, although Lenzi was never called an angel, this book reminded me a lot of angel books. Lenzi is reincarnated over and over so that she can help lost souls finish their work on earth, and move on. She, for some reason has lost her memory of her previous lives, and all this comes as a shock to her. There are malevolent souls who want to possess her and so she has a protector (the lovely Alden), to make sure that doesn't happen. Normally I don't like it when the love interests are immediately drawn to each other, but in this instance it works, because although they have just met in this lifetime, they have lived together numerous lifetimes before (even if Lenzi couldn't remember them). I liked that Lenzi had no memory of her past lives, and that we actually found out why she had no memory.I have to say, I kind of wish that Zak had been a more likable character. The first few pages he seems like a really nice guy, then BAM, it's all downhill. There wasn't too much tension, and I feel like if you're going to have a love triangle, there needs to be some redeeming qualities to both guys, and Zak was just mean. You can tell he loves Lenzi, but he just gets it all wrong. Plus, I kind of felt bad for him because he obviously needed some serious help, but Lenzi just kind of dropped him once Alden came around. BUT, who can blame her. Although Alden had a few Edward-ish qualities about him (sneaking in her room while she slept, following her around to protect her) he really didn't come off stalkerish. In fact he was pretty swoon-tastic! I just LOVED the way he loved her. It was so ridiculously sweet! I also liked that the book had a little bit of a creepiness factor. When the malevolent spirits came calling, they weren't messing around! There were a couple of scenes that seriously gave me goosebumps. I won't go into details because I don't want to spoil anything, but....creepy!Overall, this was a really good book that I enjoyed spending the day reading, and I would definitely read other books that Mary Lindsey writes, even if it IS a sequel! :) If you're looking for a new twist on the paranormal, you should check this one out!
