Undercurrent: A Siren Novel (Siren Novels)

Undercurrent - Tricia Rayburn I was pretty disappointed. I didn't care for this book. I really loved Siren (my review), so this also makes me really sad, but I wish this series had just ended with book one. Luckily, Siren can be a stand alone, so even if you don't want to read this one, I still recommend picking up Siren! The biggest reason that this book was a downer for me was that I thought it was just pretty boring. Hardly anything happened in the first three-fourths of the book. It was basically just about how Vanessa was discovering how thirsty she was all the time, and that she could use her new-found powers, but was keeping them a secret from Simon. She constantly fretted over the fact that she needed to break up with Simon, but then she kept putting it off, going back and forth about what she was going to do. All the while, telling us over and over again how irresistible she was to men. Then there was the relationship between Simon and Vanessa. I just couldn't get into it. I felt nothing about their relationship, or about Simon. He was seriously one of the most boring male leads I've ever read about. I couldn't have cared less if they broke up, or if he was snatched by a Siren and drowned. Harsh, I know.....but his character was just so nothing. It didn't help that there was never any romantic tension between them in Siren, or this book. They basically started their relationship by sleeping together in Siren, then had an awkward, are-we-together-aren't-we-together thing, where they only saw each other every once in awhile and hopped in bed together, then went back to awkwardness. The only exciting romance in the book was the possible romance between Vanessa and Parker. I saw so many possibilities with that relationship. I felt like there was a big mystery about why they had a connection, and my brain started coming up with different possibilities. Unfortunately, in the end, my theories were more exciting than what actually happened, and I was disappointed on that front as well. The book wasn't all bad. There was a creepiness factor still, that played out more towards the end. I definitely wanted to know what on earth was going on with Vanessa's friend, Paige and her grandma, Betty. There was a pretty big mystery surrounding Vanessa's father, as he was found to be talking to a strange woman. Also, wondering if Zara was going to show back up and wreak havoc on everyone kept my heart pumping a little faster. But, overall, I think this book lacked the serious creepy tone and feel that Siren captured so well.Andye
