The Rules (Project Paper Doll)

The Rules - Stacey Kade At a Glance:The Rules is a face-paced, fun, sci-fi/contemp with a unique main character and a few great twists.Sci-Fi?So, this book is supposed to be a Sci-Fi, which I love, but ended up more like a contemp, which isn't my favorite, but I still ended up really liking it a lot. The sci-fi aspects do come into play, but there isn't a lot of detailed world-building or techy jargon. In truth, I think that you'll enjoy this book, whether you're a total sci-fi geek or you wouldn't normally touch it with a ten-foot pole!Ariane Tucker:Ariane was such a blast to read about. She was funny and self-deprecating, but in a joking way. She was so loyal and protective! Sometimes to a fault. But she's not a push over, and I wouldn't want to get on her bad side or she might go all Carrie on you! I just really enjoyed her a lot.Her skin is what? You know those books where the main character talks about how plain or unattractive she is, but in reality she's really pretty, she just doesn't see it? Yeah. Not this girl. Ariane Tucker is described as having practically black eyes, being incredibly short and fragile, and having a slight grey hue to her skin. GREY! That's because Ariane is an alien-human hybrid. Yes, this was kind-of weird, but I liked it. I loved how she made fun of the fact that she couldn't even be the comic book version of the hot hybrid, she was just "off."Zane Bradshaw:The book is told, not only from Ariane's point of view, but also from the viewpoint of a guy who, at first, seems like a class A jerk. But there's more to Zane Bradshaw than meets the eye, and it didn't take long for me to like him. He's observant and smart and so, so sweet. It may have been a little unrealistic, how gentlemanly his inner thoughts were, but I didn't care. My heart melted.Banter:One of the great things about their relationship was the banter between them. They start out about as far away from compatible as possible, but over time start developing feeling for each other. I really loved how it was never about how she was magically pretty now, because she wasn't, at least not in a conventional way. It was about their mutual respect, shared interests, and personalities that clicked. And it was SO sweet!! This was one of the best things about being able to see from Zane's viewpoint.Twisty:One of my favorite elements in a book is a good plot twist. Some may see these coming, others won't, but either way they were really well done. There are things in the book that you think are just side-story, but in the end it's all important. And though this book is quick, easy and fun, it's also kind-of smart and engaging as well.Book/Movie Doppelgangers:CarrieMILA 2.0SkinnedDangerous Liasons (John Malkovich)/Cruel Intentions (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon)Oddly, none of these have anything to do with aliens. :PMoral of the Story:Sucky friends suck.
