Reading Teen

Two "young adult" moms and their teens chat about books together!

Eleanor & Park

Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell At a Glance:I can't even tell you how much I loved this book. There were some hard things dealt with, and there was some really rough language, but the story was so beautiful, charming, inspirational, endearing, funny, and all the other positive adjectives. Once I started listening, I couldn't stop. I fell completely head-over-heals for Eleanor & Park, and so will you!Audiobook:This audiobook was so freaking awesome! I absolutely loved it. There were two narrators, Rebecca Lowman, who I'm a huge fan of, read for Eleanor, and Sunil Malhotra for Park. I couldn't have asked for better narrators. They just completely imbibed all the feelings and characteristics of these two teens perfectly! I especially loved Rebecca's narration. She does such a phenomenal job of creating different characters with her voices, and is fantastic with male characters as well as females. It was awesome, you should definitely listen to this one. I started it in the morning and listened the entire day while I was packing up my house to move. It made the day a lot more enjoyable!Eleanor & ParkWhy did I wait so long to listen to this? I've had it for a long time, and I actually started it awhile back, but quit. I guess the reason was that it starts out with a LOT of language. There were a bunch of F-bombs dropped really quickly (bullies on a bus), and that's just not my thing. Also, I don't read much contemporary. BUT, I heard so many trusted friends talk about how fantastic this book was, so I finally pushed through and gave it another shot. I'm so, so glad I did. I don't think I've ever cried reading a book, but I came pretty darn close this time. This book just made me feel EVERYTHING!Eleanor has a rough, rough life. I just wanted to string her mother up by her toenails and slap some sense into her. Seriously! I felt so bad for her, I wanted to adopt her! Then there was Park. I have no words! At first I thought he was a jerk, then all of a sudden, no....he's amazing. AMAZING. I loved how awkward he was, but still so cute a funny! His family was so fantastic! I absolutely loved his mother! And even though his dad could be a little tough sometimes, the relationship between Park's dad and mom was just sigh-worthy! There were so many things that I loved about this book. All the characters, the setting, the oddities of everyone, the way it made me feel happy, then frustrated, then excited, then scared (HER STUPID DAD), then sad, then hopeful. It was all just.....awesome. Just completely awesome. If you've been putting this one off, or if you don't usually read contemporary, just stop now, and give this book a shot. You will fall in love with Eleanor & Park too!-AndyeReadingTeen.netContent: Sexual Content: Moderate Profanity: Very Heavy Violence: Moderate (Abuse) Other Notables: Abusive parents, underage drinking, bullying, body image issues
